You never know what's going to happen when a baby or toddler opens your Christmas presents. You're so excited to see their reaction to what you bought. And instead, they just start playing with the wrapping paper! Hey, kid - it's the gift that counts!
I wonder if that's how God looks at some of us who've been around church a lot. The gift He sent is Jesus - His one and only Son who gave His life to take our hell so we could have His heaven.
But some of us have only gotten as far as the wrapping paper. Jesus-beliefs, Jesus-meetings, Jesus-words, being with Jesus' people. But somehow missing Jesus.
That's why Scripture soberly warns us to "examine yourselves to see if your faith is genuine. Test yourselves. Surely you know that Jesus Christ is in you; if not, you have failed the test of genuine faith" (2 Corinthians 13:5).
