When a Neighbor Becomes a Hero Print
News - A Word from Ron Hutchcraft

Wow, some years almost have a tornado-a-day season, but tragedies can also turn every day people into heroes. It happened in a town in Minnesota not long ago. Several houses were leveled in a neighborhood. As one neighbor emerged from his damaged house, he heard the screams of a husband trapped under a house that had totally collapsed. The man was screaming for his kids. So this neighbor flew into action. He actually pulled the family out of what had once been their house, and in the end, that neighbor saved the lives of seven people in his neighborhood because he forgot about himself. He just couldn't let them be lost.

Ever since I was little, I've been fascinated by the American Revolution. I always wanted to see Concord Bridge where it sort of all began. You know, the shot heard round the world? Unfortunately, my sons weren't interested in any of that. I tried to tell them the story - well, no progress, you know, this is vacation. Who cares about history? Right? Finally, I had one last idea. I got tri-corn hats for them, and we got some sticks for them to use as muskets, and I made them the Americans and I played the Red Coats. And when they were done, they said, "Let's do it again, Daddy." Of course - they won! They weren't interested until they had a part.

Okay, here's a quick sports quiz. How many men on a football team? Eleven? Yes, well, if it's the visiting team. If it's the home team with the support of their fans on their field, there are twelve players on the team. You won't find the twelfth man anywhere on the field, of course. He's all those noisy fans cheering for the home team and trying to demoralize the opponents. In sports, those fans are literally known as the twelfth man.

We saw some very painful scenes at Ground Zero in the rubble of the World Trade Center. One of the most agonizing scenes was when tempers flared between some of those firefighters and police who had been fighting together to save or find people in the rescue and recovery effort at Ground Zero.
