Some guys will be very happy if you give them a gift certificate to one of those huge home improvement stores—especially in a tight economy. Men go looking for the tools and the materials they need to build or repair or remodel their home. Women are into home improvement projects, too. It’s called “my husband.”

I’m Ron Hutchcraft, and many a woman married, not only a man, but a project. You see, women tend to believe that their love is all that’s needed to give that guy the extreme makeover he needs in certain areas. As she gets more frustrated that he’s not changing, she pulls out the hammer and the saw of pushing and nagging, maybe even criticizing and attacking. Thus, creating the kind of scenario the Bible describes, “A quarrelsome wife is like a constant dripping on a rainy day. Better to live on a corner of the roof than share a house with a quarrelsome wife” (Proverbs 25:24 ; Proverbs 27:15-16 ).

But it doesn’t have to be that way. The Bible also talks about “A wife of noble character. She is worth far more than rubies. Her husband has full confidence in her and lacks nothing of value. She brings him good, not harm, all the days of her life. Her husband…praises her” (Proverbs 31:10-12 ; 28). See, the difference between those two women is summed up beautifully in the perspective of Billy Graham’s late wife, Ruth. She said, “It’s my job to love Billy. It’s God’s job to change him.”

A woman changes a man, not by trying to change him, but by committing him to God and loving him so unconditionally that he feels safe enough to change.
