Here’s a strange headline: “Birds bring down plane.” But that’s exactly what happened to US Air Flight 1549 out of New York—the plane that had to ditch in the Hudson River with 155 people aboard. Some geese flew into the plane’s engines, and it started going down. Something relatively small had the power to bring down something that big. That’s true for planes; that’s true for people.

I’m Ron Hutchcraft. Remember, a small stone brought down Goliath. A little look at Bathsheba brought down King David. A little compromise, a little detour has brought down many a Jesus-follower who had been flying strong. Satan doesn’t bring down lives through explosion; he does it through erosion. The devil doesn’t say, “How’d you like to come to Hell with me?” He never tells you where he’s going to take you. He just a first step to an ending you could never imagine.

The nature of temptation is that you to forget the future and you totally focus on the moment—on what giving in might do for you right now: the lie that will keep you out of trouble, the integrity compromise that will help you get ahead, the flirtation that will make you feel better about yourself, the sexual compromise that will give you a little feeling of love or excitement. Those are the kinds of seemingly small things that have ultimately brought down some very great people.

That’s why God has given us this straightforward battle plan to avoid crashing: “Above all else, guard your heart, for it is the wellspring of life” (Proverbs 4:23 ). Your heart is the engine of your life. Don’t let anything or anyone in there that could bring you down.
