There’s this weight loss commercial on TV where a woman’s talking about all the weight she’s lost and she says, “And now my husband calls me his trophy wife.” Which means what? He keeps her on a shelf in a glass case? There are some guys who think they’re Dream Boy for a woman. But we give ourselves way too much credit, guys. And some women are hoping we’ll do for them something that none of us can do.

I’m Ron Hutchcraft, and in youth ministry, my wife and I have known a lot of girls who made some life-scarring mistakes because they thought they needed a guy for their identity. That’s a lie that too many women have believed for too long. Way back in Old Testament days, a woman named Leah fell for it. Jacob worked for seven years to marry her sister Rachel and got tricked into marrying Leah instead.

Jacob eventually got Rachel, too, but Leah was the unloved one, desperately fighting for Jacob to make her feel like she was worth something. She bore him three sons, saying, “Surely my husband will love me now.” And three times it didn’t work. But the fourth time, Leah figured out who was supposed to give her worth and identity all along. The Bible says, “She conceived again and when she gave birth to a son she said, ‘This time I will praise the Lord’” (Genesis 29:31-35 ). She named that son Judah, which means “praise.”

A woman was never meant to get her identity from a guy, but from God, who loves you unconditionally. That’s why the women were still with Jesus at the cross, because He alone is the harbor for which the heart of a woman truly longs.
