Our son-in-law opened his Father's Day card from our ten-year-old grandson and found an acrostic of his first name. Now, each letter gave our grandson an opportunity to reveal some of his perceptions of his dad. For example, for the letter "R," our grandson wrote: "Refreshed after Mommy kisses him." Our son-in-law said, "How do you know that?" And his son simply pointed to his eyes with two fingers and said slyly, "I see it!"

I'm Ron Hutchcraft, and that is a big time reminder to all of us parents and grandparents that we're being watched by little eyes and listened to by little ears, and those impressions are being forever recorded in their minds and their souls. As one author once said, our children really are "wet cement."

The Bible says, "In everything set an example by doing what is good" (Titus 2:7 ). So what are our children seeing and hearing when they're around us? Are they hearing us build each other up or tear each other down? Do they see us offering to pitch in and help, or just acting like it's all about me? Are they seeing faith when hard times come, or worry and stress? Do they see a relationship with Christ that's lived out consistently at home, or just a faith that's just for church time? They're seeing and hearing much more than we know; we're writing indelible life impressions on their wet cement.

Jesus said, "If anyone causes one of these little ones...to sin, it would be better for him to have a large millstone hung around his neck and to be drowned in the depths of the sea" (Matthew 18:6 ). Jesus looks out for the children. Let's be sure we do.
