We have a hummingbird feeder, so we have hummingbirds and they’re amazing little guys. They’ve got wings that move faster than you can see, and they hover, fly backwards and sideways, and they love sugar! They’ll drink the sugar water concoction in our feeder and then fly off in a burst of acrobatic energy, only to return a few minutes later for a refill. Apparently if they go very long without some kind of sugar fix, they become sort of catatonic or birdatonic. Here they come again chirping, “Must have sugar! Must have sugar!”

I’m Ron Hutchcraft, and actually, God’s got lots of spiritual hummingbirds in His family who “must have sugar!” Spiritual sugar, that is. That’s what too many of us Christians depend on to keep us flying. The next event or spiritual high—all good, but basically sugar. It will get us going, but it can’t keep us going.

Jesus said about the one who “Hears My words and puts them into practice. He is like a man building a house who digs down deep and laid the foundation on rock” (Luke 6:48 ). Jesus said that house was unshaken by the storm. But the one who heard His words and didn’t put them into practice was, Jesus said, “without a foundation” and collapsed when the storm struck.

The only thing that will keep you going is the protein of reading God’s Word and then doing what it says. The quiet discipline of daily getting orders from Jesus. You’ve tried making it on sugar, followed by the crash, right? You’re ready for the real food of a regular time with Jesus. That’s the fuel that will keep you flying!
