That’s what health experts are suggesting–that when you wash your hands, you do it for as long as it takes you to sing “Happy Birthday.” Whatever! But apparently the single best thing we can do to stay healthy is to wash our hands regularly and thoroughly. So happy birthday!
I’m Ron Hutchcraft, and it turns out that this secret of staying physically healthy can also help us stay healthy in our relationship with Jesus—frequent washing, getting rid of the dirt we pick up during the day before it makes us sick. The Bible puts it this way: “Let us purify ourselves from everything that contaminates body and spirit” (2 Corinthians 7:1 ). We need to get clean any time we watch or listen to or do something that can infect our soul; the angry outburst, the hurting or critical words, the backstabbing, the gossip, the lie, the lustful look, the hard feelings, the proud feelings. We’re bombarded with sin-germs all day long, but we don’t have to let them develop into an infection if we’ll stop right away and do what it takes to get clean. Listen to God: “If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness” (1 John 1:9 ). We need to make that our daily m. o. As soon as we let sin win in any way, we need to run to the cross, call it what it is, receive God’s cleansing and come back clean, because today’s contaminant that we don’t get rid of is tomorrow’s costly infection. We want to give you more encouragement in living for Jesus. If you’ll go to our website, I think you’ll find some. It’s ALifeThatMatters.org.
