It’s almost here—Super Bowl Sunday! Water departments in major cities have reported they can tell when the commercials come on; the water pressure suddenly drops dramatically and simultaneously—millions of people taking a bathroom break at the same time—a lot of people watching. I hope it’s a thriller like last year. Of course, last year my team won—the New York Giants. Tom Coughlin, the coach, explained why he thought his underdog team upset the almost unbeatable New England Patriots. He said, “These guys took their names off their jerseys and left their egos at the locker room door.”

I’m Ron Hutchcraft, and that’s an important secret of winning in life, not just in sports. I grew up on this little piece of wisdom: There’s no limit to what God can do when you don’t care who gets the credit. That’s called humility. God lets us know His feelings on the subject like this, “Before his downfall, a man’s heart is proud, but humility comes before honor” (Proverbs 18:12 ).

See, God’s not just going to bless a person who’s operating out of pride, self-importance, self-promoting, or self-serving. The Bible says, “God resists the proud” (1 Peter 5:5 ). Now if you’re all about you, you can count on God bringing one of His pride-busters into your life. He loves you too much to let you continue to be proud. Because, as one writer said, “Pride is the mother of all sins.” A lot of people don’t understand humility. It’s not thinking you’re worthless. That would be an insult to your Creator. It’s self-forgetfulness. “God gives grace to the humble” the Bible says. God hates pride; He loves humility. If you want to win, take your name off your jersey and leave your ego at the door.

We want to be able to be an ongoing encouragement to you at our website. I hope you’ll check it out. It’s ALifeThatMatters.org.
