Download MP3 (right click to save) As Memorial Day approaches, I remember when our family visited Arlington National Cemetery where the heroes of many of America’s wars are buried. The kids were young, but it was good for them to understand a little of what our way of life has cost. After looking at that sea of grave markers as far as the eye could see, our son said, “Dad, what do all those white things mean?” “In three words, son, freedom is expensive.”
I’m Ron Hutchcraft. You know, freedom has cost a lot for our country and for our Savior. Somehow the cross has become something often made of gold or silver, a religious symbol, a necklace. And we may miss what it really means–that the only hope for our souls was the brutal butchering of the only Son of God on a rugged cross. The Bible says, “You were redeemed from the empty way of life handed down to you from your forefathers…with the precious blood of Christ, a lamb without blemish.” (1 Peter 1:18-19 ). I’m not sure we understand the cost of our sinning against the God who made us, our defiant hijacking of our life from the way He meant us to live. “The wages of sin is death” (Romans 6:23 ) the Bible says. Eternal death, forever cut off from God in a hell that we can’t imagine. That’s what Jesus took on Himself when He sacrificed Himself for us. It’s absolutely futile to try to pay sin’s death penalty by being good or religious. It took dying; it took Jesus’ dying. But because He died, you can be free from sin’s guilt and sin’s awful penalty. But your freedom cost Jesus everything. He doesn’t need a memorial; He’s asking for your heart. We’d love to help you get started with Him this very day. Would you check out our website? It’s ALifeThatMatters.org. This radio program references: 1 Peter 1:18-19 ; Romans 6:23 |
