Download MP3 (right click to save) Not long ago, we had occasion to pass through Albuquerque, New Mexico. And I was reminded of a dear Native American friend, who is up in years and battling some physical problems. He told me that he views this part of his life as he does driving to Albuquerque. See, there’s this long climb to get to the top of this steep hill, and then suddenly, there it is: the beautiful lights of the city that you’ve wanted to get to.
I’m Ron Hutchcraft. What a picture! For many, life is a long, hard climb up a very steep hill. If you focus on the difficulty and the pain of the climb, you can easily get discouraged. But at the end of our grueling journey are the lights of the city we wanted to get to–a heaven so glorious that it will erase the hassles of our journey in a moment. That’s why it’s so important to stay focused on the destination, not just the journey. Paul, who endured enormous pain and suffering on every level, weighed it out this way: “Our present sufferings are not worth comparing with the glory that will be revealed in us” (Romans 8:18 ). Now, with that big picture perspective on the pain of his journey, he said: “We do not lose heart…for our light and momentary troubles are achieving for us an eternal glory that far outweighs them all. So we fix our eyes not on what is seen, but on what is unseen. For what is seen is temporary, but what is unseen is eternal” (2 Corinthians 4:16-18 ). There’s the word that makes the trip bearable: “temporary.” Stay faithful, take your long journey a day at a time and know that someday soon, in one glorious moment, you’ll see the lights of that city. His city! Listen, if you’re looking for more spiritual encouragement, would you check out our website? It’s ALifeThatMatters.org. This radio program references: Romans 8:18 ; 2 Corinthians 4:16-18 |
