Download MP3 (right click to save) It wasn’t easy for Brian to talk about. He confided struggling with his sexual identity, and as we talked, the conversation became less about that and more about the relationship between a father and son. All of Brian’s brothers are jocks–like his Dad. Brian doesn’t fit the mold. He’s more into music and drama and art. No less male, just different. Dad has struggled to know how to love a son who’s so different from him and his other sons. And Brian thinks that what he’s ultimately looking for is a father’s love. I’m Ron Hutchcraft, and the struggle in this family is not unique. Many moms and dads didn’t get the child they ordered. You know, you wanted an athlete, you got a scholar; you wanted a musician, you got a mechanic; you wanted someone who was tough, they’re tender; you want someone who is tender, they’re tough. You didn’t get the child you wanted. I can tell you, you got the child God wanted. The Bible says, “Sons are a heritage from the Lord, children a reward from Him” (Psalm 127:3 ). And each child is, in the Bible’s words, “God’s workmanship” (Ephesians 2:10 ). Too many of us parents make the mistake of trying to recreate what God created. Don’t mess with His masterpiece. Some much-quoted parental advice: “Train a child in the way he should go, and when he is old, he will not turn from it” (Proverbs 22:6 ). Now that word ”train” in the Hebrew carries the sense of following the natural bent of a child. Go with how God made him or her, invest in the strengths God gave them, praise them for their “make a difference” qualities. Everything your child needs for God’s plans, he has. And what she doesn’t have, she doesn’t need. Partner with God in nurturing your son and daughter into all He created them to be. This radio program references: Psalm 127:3 ; Ephesians 2:10 ; Proverbs 22:6 |
