I've used the same Bible for a long time. I know my way around it like getting around my own house, but one morning I realized it was lost. It had actually been missing most of the previous day, but I didn't miss it until the next morning. Well, my assistant found it where I'd left it in our chapel the day before, and I was a happy guy again.

I'm Ron Hutchcraft and I actually got to thinking that day about an interesting question every follower of Jesus would do well to think about: How long before you would miss your Bible? Well, for some of us our Bible might as well be missing for as frequently or infrequently as we actually spend time in it. For too many Jesus-followers, their Bible is an emergency kit that they run for when there's trouble or it's a spiritual decoration that you carry on spiritual occasions, but it's not the compass for deciding the road you take each day - the oxygen of your relationship with Jesus.

I referred to Christians as Jesus-followers - well, I don't know how you can be following Jesus if you don't know where He's headed, and I don't know how you can know where He's headed if you don't spend time with Him in the Book He gave us. Each morning our prayers should be that of David: "Open my eyes that I may see wonderful things in Your law" (Psalm 119:18 ).

All the Christian meetings and programs and speakers, they're no substitute for meeting Jesus each morning by reading His love letter to you. It's not the Bible we've been missing, it's Jesus, and He deserves to be non-negotiable, not optional in your daily schedule!

This radio program references: Psalm 119:18

Dear Ron: About 30 years ago as I was listening to you on Moody Radio, You gave a talk about the Seven Levels to Approach the Scriptures. I once knew them. As I get older it's becoming harder and harder to remember things. Would you please send me the levels in an e-mail? Thank you very much for helping me with this. I have tried to tell many people about that message I heard over Moody Radio so long ago. Ellen
