He says yes to God when God tells Him to marry his virgin fiancé Mary who is pregnant by a miracle from God–a story no one’s going to believe. He’s living under this cloud in his town; his reputation is in question; then he gets a double hit of bad news–Caesar Augustus, the Roman Emperor, wants to raise taxes and Joseph has to make a grueling 90-mile trip to his hometown of Bethlehem to register. Mary is ready to deliver! He does what God wants him to do, and things just keep going downhill. But there’s something going on that’s so much bigger than what he can see, just like there is in your life and mine. I’m Ron Hutchcraft, and here’s what the Bible says, ”Caesar Augustus issued a decree that a census should be taken of the entire Roman world…so Joseph went up from Nazareth to Bethlehem…with Mary” (Luke 2:1 , 4-5). Now who was behind this rocking of Joseph’s world? Some arrogant Roman ruler? No. God was working His plan. Nearly 500 years before, God had revealed the plan. He said, “Bethlehem…out of you will come…one who will be ruler over Israel, whose origins are from of old” (Micah 5:2 ). God promised that His Son would be born in Bethlehem…Joseph and Mary were in Nazareth. God moves an empire to accomplish His amazing plans, and the most powerful guy in the world is just His instrument. God may be rocking your world right now–everything’s moving. It’s not humans that are ultimately behind it; God is moving whatever He has to move to put you where you’re destined to be. There’s a big God with a big plan, and there’s something much bigger going on than you could ever imagine. We want to be a part of plugging you into God’s bigger plan.
