Well, Oprah Winfrey’s online teaching spirituality now. More than 700,000 people have registered for her ten-week web seminar. It’s based on her fastest selling book she’s ever offered in her book club. It’s a spiritual self-help guide called A New Earth.

I’m Ron Hutchcraft, and it seems to me that the search that’s going on here for spiritual reality is really a sincere one. And the goal really is a better life. There’s a problem though. I think the answers are inadequate for a really hungry soul. Oprah says this course focuses on the importance of the present moment rather than obsessing on our past.

Well, hey, we have all got stuff in our past that we do think about more than we’d like to. It’s stuff, though, that can’t be dismissed just by a better way of thinking. We need an eraser, not just a spiritual sedative. That is something only God can do, like make our sins go away. It says in the Bible, “Who is a God like you, who pardons sin? You will hurl all our iniquities into the depths of the sea” (Micah 7:18-19 ). Now, that is spiritual freedom.

And we do need to be free from our past in order to live a life that matters, but we can’t set ourselves free. That’s why Jesus came. That’s why Jesus died, to pay for all of the junk of our lives.
