Our two-year-old grandson really loves driving the car. Well, no, I mean pretending to drive the car. He just grabs the wheel; he turns it back and forth and laughs out loud. Now, we all know he might like to drive, but he really shouldn’t.

I’m Ron Hutchcraft, and look, children were never meant to drive, and neither are we. And that’s the problem with an awful lot of the spirituality that’s out there. Oprah Winfrey’s got a new on-line spiritual self-help course, and it’s based on a very popular book. She says about this, it helps us distance ourselves from our egos and to open ourselves up to a higher self which we call consciousness. Well, that sounds pretty promising to a searching heart. It offers a way to a better life—to a life that matters.

But here’s the problem. It leaves the same person in the driver’s seat, and that would be “me.” The Bible says very clearly, "All things were created by him and for him" (Colossians 1:16 ). You were created by Him and for Him; so was I. We don’t need a higher self. We need the Most High God. We need to be living for the One we made for with Him in the driver’s seat. He’s God—we’re not. We don’t need a self-improvement program. We need the miracle rebirth the Bible calls being a new creation in Christ. Don’t settle for anything less than being a new creation.
