What a funny picture to be on the front page of the newspaper. It’s a soldier fighting on the front lines in his underwear. It was during a Taliban attack in Afghanistan. One of our guys grabbed his helmet and his bulletproof gear, but he didn’t bother to put his pants on, and there he was in his skivvies. And just to complete the picture, his boxers said “I love New York” and there were hearts all over them.

I’m Ron Hutchcraft, and I got to tell you I got to thinking, you know, God’s got way too many soldiers like that; soldiers who like don’t get properly dressed for the battles they have to fight. Jesus was giving His disciples His final orders. He said, “I am going to send you what my Father has promised (He was talking about God’s Holy Spirit who would give them the power to do His work.); but stay in the city until you have been clothed with power from on high” (Luke 24:49 ).

The disciples were all ready to go do a great work for God, you know, and they want God to do a great work through them. Jesus said, “No, wait. Wait until He’s done a great work in you before you try to have Him do anything through you.” Don’t try to do things for Me without your spiritual clothes on—or more accurately, your armor. Or as the Bible says, “Put on the full armor of God so you can take your stand against the devil’s schemes” (Ephesians 6:11 ).

Bottom line—don’t head out into your day without a personal time with Jesus, your source of power. Don’t try to do God’s work without exchanging your power for His power. With the battles we have to fight, we can’t go running out in our spiritual skivvies!
