It’s amazing how much I have in common with America’s record-breaking, Olympic swimmer, Michael Phelps. See, he said his life is basically, “I eat, I sleep and I swim.” I’m pretty good at two of those three, but don’t look for me in the Olympics. While we were all fascinated with history being made in that Olympic pool, I learned that the pool may actually have been part of the records that were made there.

I’m Ron Hutchcraft and Sports Illustrated said that surprisingly few records were broken at the previous Athens Olympics because of the pool because it was shallow. Now in Beijing, they made a deep pool and the article says, “Deep water absorbs turbulence while shallow water deflects it.” Now the Beijing pool, it says was, “Engineered for greatness.”

Now I love that idea that deep water absorbs turbulence. You swim faster and faster when the water’s deeper. Well that works for you and me in our relationship with God too. See, when it’s shallow, life’s turbulence knocks you around more. When you and God are deep, you can swim through it largely undeterred.

Stretches where my time with Him has been inconsistent, man I just did a little God treatment on the surface, but it was not enough to penetrate deep into my soul. So it didn’t move me, it didn’t change me, it didn’t fill me up with the resources to meet my day and the pressure started squeezing, the bombardment hit and it was Ron who responded, not Ron’s God; it wasn’t pretty. I’m nothing less than desperate to go deep with God each day cause the Bible says, “You will keep Him in perfect peace whose mind is stayed on you” (Isaiah 26:3 ).

We’d love to help you grow in that relationship if you’ll go to our website. It’s ALifeThatMatters.org because God put you here to live a life that matters.
