My wife was just a little girl when she learned what security really means. On winter nights, her parents would go out to the barn to milk the cows, and they left her by the back door, looking after her little baby sister. Her eyes were focused on one thing—that was the lantern that her folks carried out to the barn with them and they hung it on a nail while they milked. She knew there were some nasty critters like panthers that lived in the area. So she watched that one patch of light in the darkness, and she knew that as long as it was steady, she was safe.

I’m Ron Hutchcraft, and that steady light in the darkness—that’s what we all need in times when there’s a lot of uncertainty and even danger. Three days after the terrorist attacks of September 11, when our world was shaking violently, the President of the United States pointed the nation to a steady light in the darkness. He quoted this from the Bible, “I am convinced that neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither the present nor the future…nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord” (Romans 8:38-39 ).

That covers anything and everything that we might put our security in. But they all have one thing in common—they’re all “loseable” except one thing. That’s the anchor of a love relationship with God that was made possible by Jesus and His death on the cross for what separates us from God. In the Bible’s words, He’s “the same yesterday, today and forever” (Hebrews 13:8 ). As long as that light’s there, you’re safe and nothing can extinguish that light.
