He was one of my boyhood heroes—Davy Crockett, “King of the Wild Frontier.” You know, every episode started with Davy Crockett’s real motto: “Be sure you’re right—then go ahead.” So I put on my coonskin hat and try to do that.

I’m Ron Hutchcraft. God could vote for that approach to making life decisions. In fact, He actually says something like that in a verse that has become one of my stars to steer by. Only eight words… It’s my kind of memory verse. Here’s what it says, “Offer right sacrifices and trust in the Lord” (Psalm 4:5 ).

OK, you’ve got three guidelines here for making life’s hard choices, maybe like one you’re facing right now. First, make sure what God wants you to do. The best way to see if it’s God’s idea is to ask Him for something in the Bible that will light up the next step and trust that what you feel most consistently when you’re alone with Him, praying is what He wants you to do.

Secondly, don’t let the cost stop you. “Offer right sacrifices.” The right thing always costs you something, but not nearly as much as the wrong thing. Don’t let the cost keep you from doing what’s right.

Last of all, leave the consequences to God. We often miss God’s best because we let our “yeah buts” decide it; all those “yeah buts” that we’re afraid will happen if we obey. ”Offer right sacrifices and trust in the Lord.” The consequences of doing what He wants are His problem! Eight little words—your blueprint for making life’s hard choices!
