Download MP3 (right click to save) I had to get some vaccinations recently, and it hurt some. But at least I understand that a little pain is better than the big pain of the disease I could get otherwise. But when it’s your baby that’s getting the inoculations, that’s tough. The baby is bawling when he gets the shot and he’s looking at you like, “Don’t you love me, mommy and daddy? Why are you letting this happen to me?” If you tried to explain that you’re putting them through this pain because you love them, they wouldn’t understand anyway, but it is because you love them.
I’m Ron Hutchcraft, and I have found that that’s an important picture to keep in mind when I’m going through a painful season. It hurts. I’m tempted to ask my Heavenly Father, “Why are You letting this happen to me?” If He explained the eternal purposes He’s using the pain to accomplish, we wouldn’t understand anyway. But it’s for the same reason we subject our children to a little preventive pain so they won’t have something much more damaging later on. We love them. Every parent understands that sometimes love doesn’t feel like love. Love hurts sometimes, but it’s no less love. The Bible says, “God disciplines us for our good that we may share in His holiness. No discipline seems pleasant at the time, but painful. Later on, however, it produces a harvest of righteousness and peace for those who have been trained by it” (Hebrews 12:10-11 ). See, God uses the pain to make a life-building point that we just wouldn’t get otherwise because He loves you. So if you’re going to get the pain, be sure you get the point.
