Download MP3 (right click to save) I don’t know how it got started, but it quickly became our family’s New Year’s Eve tradition. We gave everyone a sheet of colored construction paper with letters for “Happy New Year” in acrostic form down the side. Now, our mission was to use each letter to start some resolution that we wanted to make for the next year. Like ”H”–hug more…”A”–aggravate my brother less…”P”–pitch in on yard work. Wait, I think I just dreamed that my boys wrote that. At least we were looking ahead. Right? I’m Ron Hutchcraft, and God spells out a happy new year in some of my anchor verses in the Bible: “Forget the former things; do not dwell on the past. See, I am doing a new thing! Now it springs up; do you not perceive it?” (Isaiah 43:18-19 ) See, God’s got some new things He wants to do in your life in the months ahead, but you’ll miss them if you’re dwelling on the past–the baggage, the hurts, the failures, the disappointments. I’m not talking about living in denial; all those things were real. What I’m saying is when your mind starts to go there and you hit the replay button, hit the stop button right away. Our grandson had a milestone day when he turned twenty pounds. Since he was born, the law has required that his car seat face backwards for safety. But when you’re twenty pounds, you can finally face forward. It is so much better looking at where you’re headed than where you’ve already been. Maybe your happy new year will depend on which way your seat is facing. Dwelling on the past is dwelling on what can’t be changed–that is despair. Facing the future is focusing on what is yet to be written, and that is hope. So as you head into this brand new year, make sure you’re facing the right direction. And if you’d like to make this a year where you make a greater difference than you’ve ever made before, would you check out our website ALifeThatMatters.org?
