You know, we may have to rewrite that old song "Take Me Out To the Ballgame." Now it’s give me some steroids and watch me hit, and I’ll be a champ though I don’t deserve it. Actually it’s pretty sad, there are more sluggers and pitchers with a secret. They’ve used illegal growth hormones and drugs that will make them unnaturally strong, and it’s put a cloud over baseball. Look at this big, strong star out there, and you’ve got to ask yourself, “Yeah, but is he for real?” It’s the “anything to win” approach to life, and that’s not just in sports.

I’m Ron Hutchcraft, and this “anything to win” thing affects business and how we handle our relationships—anything to win. And when you make unholy compromises to have a life that matters, the cost is just too high. You don’t win, you lose. You lose respect for the man or woman in the mirror, and it’s ugly to lose the trust of other people and the respect of other people.

Proverbs 22:1 says, “A good name is to be treasured above riches.” And a good name takes years to gain and one day to lose. Every time you compromise your character to get what you want, another piece of you gets like nibbled away. That’s why Jesus said, “What shall it profit a man if he gains the whole world and loses his soul” (Mark 8:36 ). Does it matter how far you get if you’re discredited by how you got there?
