One moment that Air France jetliner was on the tracking screen; the next minute it had vanished from the screen and the sky, and over 200 people were lost in the crash. As investigators tried to piece together what happened, they suspected that the malfunction of one piece of equipment was probably a contributing factor—it’s the small speed gauge that warns pilots when their speed has slowed below what’s needed to keep the plane in the air. Without that slowdown warning, you can be on the verge of crashing and not even know it.

I’m Ron Hutchcraft, and it’s not just planes that crash; people crash too. Too many of us know someone who had been flying high spiritually and suddenly they crashed. But moral and spiritual crashes aren’t as sudden as they might appear; they are usually preceded by a loss of spiritual speed and altitude. Often the descent into the danger zone is gradual, almost imperceptible until it’s too late.

That’s why God has given us His internal warning system. It’s called the Holy Spirit. Jesus said the Holy Spirit inside every believer “will convict…of guilt in regard to sin” (John 16:8 ). He may have been doing that in your heart recently, trying to get you to face that sin, that compromise, that flirtation, those rationalizations, that drop in spiritual altitude. The Bible says, “Quench not the Spirit” (1 Thessalonians 5:19 ). Whatever you do, don’t ignore His warnings. If you do, you’ll crash.
