This past Christmas, they were telling us that gift cards might not be a great idea. Hey listen! It’s fun going into your favorite store with someone else’s money to spend. The problem in these financially unpredictable times: you can’t be sure the store will be there when you go to cash in your card. There’s been fear that some well-known stores just might not make it and might not be there to back up the card that somebody bought from them.

I’m Ron Hutchcraft, and the gift card, of course, is only as good as the store behind it. And we’ve had reason to fear that some won’t be able to do it. But then, isn’t that the issue behind every promise we’ve ever had in our lives: can they, and will they back up the promise? People are worried about whether the company, or even the relationship they’ve invested in will be there in the future; whether people they’ve counted on will be there. Even the “till death do us part” promises at a wedding altar are too often broken.

But there are still promises you can stake your life on—the promises God has made. The psalmist spoke for all God’s children for all generations when he said, “Your promises have been thoroughly tested, and Your servant loves them” (Psalm 119:140 ). The testimony of Joshua is the testimony of every child of God: “Not one of all the good promises the Lord your God gave you has failed” (Joshua 23:14 ). Anchor your life, anchor your decisions, anchor your emotions to the unfailing promises of God. They are the secure foundation when everything else is going crazy. God will always be there to deliver what He has promised.
