April Fool’s Day has become frustrating for me. I have this mischievous side that loves to leave a trail of “gotcha’s” for people. Life is so busy, I just don’t have time for it anymore. It’s good news for my friends and family. I’m actually not sure any of us have the right to even call someone a fool. Of course, if Jesus does it, that person really is a fool…and He has.

I’m Ron Hutchcraft, and the man Jesus called a fool was actually a very successful farmer who was trying to figure out how to handle his bumper crops. And here’s the story. ”Then he said, ‘This is what I’ll do. I will tear down my barns and build bigger ones. And I’ll say to myself, ‘You have plenty of good things laid up for many years. Take life easy: eat, drink and be merry.’ But God said to him, ‘You fool! This very night your life will be demanded from you’” (Luke 12:16-20 ). Here’s a man who was planning for his business, planning for his relaxation, planning for his pleasure–for everything but the main thing–eternity. And that’s what God calls foolish.

Our lives are full, no doubt. The stuff that lasts a few years is right in front of us, and we get consumed with all the earth-stuff and earth-issues, but you and I are one heartbeat away from eternity. It’s going to be spent in one of two places—heaven or hell. And the determining factor is what we do with Jesus, because only Jesus paid the death penalty for our sin. So only He can forgive it and get us to heaven. Without Him, we are totally unprepared for eternity.

You’ve got nothing more important to do than to be prepared for eternity. When you trust your soul to Jesus, you have the wonderful peace of knowing that you are ready for eternity, whenever it comes.
