I first saw that statue when I used to walk to church from my college in downtown Chicago. It’s suspended above your head in a little indentation in the wall. It’s actually Jesus, hanging on the cross. I drove by there recently and Jesus is still there, along with the haunting Biblical question that I’ve never been able to forget over the years, “Is it nothing to you, all you who pass by?”
I’m Ron Hutchcraft, and think about it: thousands of cars and countless pedestrians, zipping by every day on that very busy street oblivious to the Man on the cross. Like so many of us, busy with our lives, always on our way somewhere, never taking time to stop at the cross. In fact, the Bible says that one big reason so many people will miss heaven is simply neglecting Jesus; not out-and-out rejecting what He did on the cross for them, just neglecting Him.
God puts it this way: “How shall we escape if we ignore such a great salvation?” (Hebrews 2:3 ). Now, that’s salvation as in being rescued from a deadly situation, and that’s what’s going on at that cross. That’s God’s only Son, paying the death penalty that you and I deserve for hijacking our life from the One who made us. So He’s the only One who can forgive the sin that will otherwise keep us out of heaven and send us to hell.
This could be the day that you take for yourself the eternal life that Jesus died to give you. Don’t risk another day without Him, because the one question God will ask you when you stand before Him is, “What did you do with My Son?”
