One person in an office comes down with the sickness of the month. Pretty soon, several people in that office have the sickness of the month. One member of the family gets the flu, and before long, every member of the family has the flu. It’s family germs—we’re unintentionally good at passing onto to someone else what’s wrong with us.

I’m Ron Hutchcraft, and every family has germs and sicknesses that they pass onto those close to them. I’m talking about spiritual germs. That’s why we end up saying or doing to our children the same ugly things our parents said or did to us, even though we swore we never would. The family germs are actually family sins: sinful ways of getting what we want, of treating people, negativity, anger, no communication, running from our problems. But there’s awesomely good news!

Those infections can stop with you because of what Jesus Christ did when He died for every sin on the cross. The Bible says, “You were redeemed from the empty way of life handed down to you from your forefathers…with the precious blood of Christ” (1 Peter 1:18-19 ). Down through the centuries, millions of people have found in that cross the power to break the cycle and change the course of generations yet unborn.

As one Native American mom told me lately, “My family has a chance because of what Christ did on the cross.” So does yours.
