We’ve had our dishwasher for a while now, but Mr. Observant here just noticed a cool little feature that’s been there all along. So many times someone will open the dishwasher, find it full, and ask that familiar question, “Dirty or clean?” Guess what? There’s a sign on the dishwasher that can tell that answer. Slide it one way, it says “dirty”; slide it the other way, it says “clean.” I think I’m going to start using that little feature.

I’m Ron Hutchcraft, and that question “Dirty or clean?” turns out to have much greater significance when it comes to spiritual issues, like the question on which our eternal future hinges. And it could be summarized in those three words, “Dirty or clean?” Because no dirty heart, no heart with sin in it will be able to enter God’s heaven. According to the Bible, “Nothing impure will ever enter it” (Revelation 21:27 ).

Every religion on earth gives us a list of good things we can do to try to make up for our sin, but that doesn’t take it away. The Bible tells us that Jesus is “the Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world” (John 1:29 ). There’s only one person who can change the sin on your heart or mine from dirty to clean—the person who absorbed all the guilt and all the penalty for every wrong thing you’ve ever done. Some of us church folks are in danger of missing heaven because we’ve tried to put a clean sign on our own heart, based on our goodness. But if Jesus doesn’t say you’re clean, you’re not. The Bible says, “Everyone who believes in Him (that means pinning all your hopes on Him) receives forgiveness of sins through His Name!” (Acts 10:43 ).
