Cheerleaders! What would football be without them? Even if they sometimes don’t know which team has the ball, you know? But there’s one thing you can count on. No matter what happens on the field, you can count on the cheerleaders to always be on your side.

I’m Ron Hutchcraft, and it’s not just football teams that need cheerleaders. Every man I know needs one. Not somebody with a megaphone and a cute little uniform, but a woman who is always on your side, no matter what’s happening…even if you’re losing.

Proverbs 31 in the Bible gives us God’s amazing description of a woman who is “of noble character…worth far more than rubies…(whose) children arise and call her blessed…(whose) husband…praises her” (Proverbs 31:10-11 , 28). That’s not bad. It says of her relationship with her husband that “her husband has full confidence in her and lacks nothing of value…her husband is respected at the city gates” (Proverbs 31:10 , 23). I think this guy’s a winner in their community because she gives him confidence at home. She’s a cheerleader for the man she loves.

Like I said, every man needs the loyalty, encouragement, support and praise of his wife to have the confidence to be who God wants him to be and to carry out his God-given assignments. Being his cheerleader doesn’t mean you agree with everything he says or does; he does need you to be his honest mirror. But it does mean you focus on his strengths—the things he does right, not just the things he does wrong—his progress, the good things God did when He created Him. With a cheerleader like that, a man can go onto the field and he can play like a champion.
