I didn’t get to pick my birthday, but I like it; it’s during the Christmas season. As a kid, when you have a Christmas season birthday, it can work for or against you. I did my best to make it work for me. Since it was so close to Christmas, “Hey, listen, could you get me this big thing I really want?” Hey, it usually worked. It’s not working so well for me now that I grew up. But with all the celebration that’s in the air, I still think this is a wonderful time to be born.

I’m Ron Hutchcraft, and here’s the birth that started the whole thing. “The time came for the baby to be born and she gave birth to her firstborn, a son” (Luke 2:6-7 ). And then came the birth announcement from heaven to some shepherds on a hillside, “Today…a Savior has been born to you; He is Christ the Lord” (Luke 2:11 ). Now that’s Savior as in “rescuer”—someone who comes to rescue you from a deadly situation that you can’t get yourself out of. The Baby born that first Christmas morning was born to rescue you and me from a deadly spiritual situation we could not get out of–the eternal death penalty for hijacking the running of our lives from our God.

It wasn’t the cradle that made heaven possible; it was the cross where Jesus died to absorb all the junk of our lives. Heaven is a place reserved for God’s children, which means you have to be born into His family like you were born into your human family. And the Bible says, “To all who received Christ, He gave the right to become the children of God” (John 1:12 ). The day you open your heart to Jesus, you are born into God’s family. And the day we celebrate His coming to earth will be the day He comes into your life.
