If this summer is beach or pool time for you, it’s probably also lifeguard time. I didn’t realize until recently one of the greatest, surprising challenges that those lifeguards face. I was reading one writer who described his summer lifeguard job at a California beach. He was told in training that people might resist their assistance or resent it. He assumed anyone in trouble would welcome help, right? Then came his first rescue and the guy fought him off, he cursed at him, he kicked him, he clawed him. That’s why lifeguards are trained with the last resort rescue technique; you knock them out so you can save them.

I’m Ron Hutchcraft, and actually Jesus knows that lifeguard feeling. He came to rescue us spiritually from the death penalty for our sin, and we do everything to fight Him off, to try and save ourselves. The Bible says, “Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners” (1 Timothy 1:15 ). Not to be our example or give us a religion, but to save us; and He loves you so much that if He has to, well He’ll hit you pretty hard to get your attention.

It might explain some of the hits you’ve experienced lately. He wants to give you a life that matters forever, but sometimes He has to knock us out to save us. Don’t fight Him any longer. He only wants to love you; He just wants to rescue you.
