OK, somebody’s having a bad day, we say, “He’s got an attitude.” Actually, we all have some kind of attitude. But what determines the kind of attitude we have? Well, attitude is actually a pilot’s word: your position in relation to the horizon, because the horizon is the only fixed point in an environment where everything else is fluid—the weather, your feelings, your perceptions. So, when you’re flying, you want to line up your position to the horizon. That way you’re not going to crash. I asked an Air Force veteran who works with satellites how this attitude thing works up there in space where there’s no horizon. He said, “We use the North Star.” Once again, you’re always OK as long as you’re lined up with the one point that’s never going to move.

I’m Ron Hutchcraft, and honestly, some days I have a really positive attitude. But then there are those times when my attitude’s anything but positive. I’m cranky or stressed or impatient or harsh or negative. It all has to do with whether or not my heart and my course are lined up with the one fixed point in my life—my all-powerful, all-loving Heavenly Father.

The Bible puts it this way, “You will keep in perfect peace all who trust in You, all whose thoughts are fixed on You” (Isaiah 26:3 – NLT). It’s when I fix my heart on how big the problems are, how heavy the bombardment is, how hopeless the situation looks, how crazy people are acting. That’s when I go into a tailspin. That doesn’t have to be, if I’ll quickly snap out of it and say, “Get your eyes back where they belong—on your one fixed point—on your awesome God!”

Hey, you may be needing some more spiritual encouragement at this point in your life, and I hope you’ll find some at our website. It’s ALifeThatMatters.org.
