Little Scotty really wanted to play with his dad, and his dad really wanted to read his massive Sunday paper. Well, Scotty kept tapping on the newspaper, and finally Scotty’s dad had an idea: he tore out a page of the paper that had a map of the world. He tore it into puzzle pieces and he said, “As soon as you put this picture together, I’ll play with you.” Two minutes later his son shows up with the picture together. He said, “Scotty, how did you put this picture of the whole world together so fast?” He said, “Daddy, it was easy. There was a picture of a man on the other side. If you put the man together right, the world goes together just fine.”

I’m Ron Hutchcraft, and that’s something to stop and think about as we think about fathers this weekend. If you put the man together right, the world of your family will go together just fine. The Bible makes it very clear that the buck stops with Dad when it comes to the condition of a family. It’s like the man’s the thermostat that sets the temperature for everyone. One Bible writer didn’t like the kind of climate he was setting. He said, “What I do is not the good I want to do; no, the evil I do not want to do–this I keep on doing. Who will rescue me? Thanks be to God, through Jesus Christ our Lord” (Romans 7:19 , 24-25).

There’s this darkness inside us that keeps us from being what our kids, our wife need us to be; too much selfishness and anger and hurting people we love. We need a rescue from our sin, and that’s what Jesus died to do. So when a dad gives himself to Jesus Christ, Jesus puts the man together like he’s never been together before.
