Ron Hutchcraft Ministries - What Are You Desperate For?

When it comes to picking teams to root for in athletic events or competitions of any kind, my bent is to pull for the underdog. There's just something about seeing the big guy get beat that really gets me going! And I've often wondered what it is that inspires underdogs to ascertain such a hope of defeating the much better competition. I've landed on what I think is the main formula for their success.

Desperation. Teams or individuals who are not expected to win tend to "go into the ring" with a spirit or attitude of desperation. The odds are against them. They must win no matter what it costs them, and if they don't win, at least everybody watching knew they left it all on the field. I am finding that desperation is the ticket to a successful spiritual journey as well.

Think about it - what are you really desperate for right now? Love that won't abandon you? Peace and quiet? Financial relief? Personal vision? Survival? Unfortunately, the only sense of desperation some of us feel is for our team to win a college football bowl game or for our kids to pass another semester of school. Not bad things, of course, but I believe that the moment we lose our sense of desperation in our walk with God is the moment we quit hearing from God. And it's the moment we stop living for something greater than ourselves.

Think of what would happen if we lived with the same sense of desperation to see our lost friends and loved ones come to Christ as we do wanting to prove to our boss that we have what it takes? Or what would happen if we became as desperate to receive something fresh from God's Word as we are to make sure we don't miss our favorite TV show? I suppose there are many noble things we can be desperate for. But I believe we will see lives change around us when we become desperate to see God move in and through our lives like never before. So I ask you again, what are you desperate for?
