OK, so there are gobs of blogs. Why one more? I trust this one is going to be very special. The purpose of this blog is to have a discussion and dialogue about a subject that is a high, high priority of Jesus. Jesus said, "Follow me," right? So, what were His priorities? His own personal mission statement is found in Luke 19:10 : "For the Son of Man came to seek and to save what was lost." Looking at those words in the original Greek, it goes a little more like this: "Jesus came to look for, and rescue the dying."
We are surrounded by spiritually lost and dying people everywhere—our neighbors, our friends, our family, our co-workers. What is it going to take to reach them for Jesus? Statistically speaking, it probably won't be a TV program, or a radio program, or a big event, or a tract; it will be because of a personal connection and relationship with another follower of Jesus. So, welcome to a blog that is completely dedicated to developing an ongoing conversation about what we call Rescue. Spiritual rescue that is. We all know what Rescue is, right? Rescue is what we see on the news each night! Rescuers become our heroes. Hey, somebody got rescued! And here on earth, that means they may get another 30, 40, or 50 years on this planet! Why wouldn't Spiritual Rescue be all the more significant? Now we're talking about someone's eternity! OK, I might be going a little fast here for some of you. For most followers of Jesus, we have a theological understanding of this; we agree with the Bible, and that there's a heaven and a hell, but do we feel the urgency? Do we see what Jesus sees? Do we have His eyes for really grasping what's going on here? We can get so caught up in our own world—my family, my work, my projects - that we forget that the people we see everyday could spend an eternity apart from Christ. Isn't it true that maybe, just maybe, God is asking us to play a part in that? It is my sense that for a lot of us, we're wrestling with the bigger picture. We're looking to sort out how to make a bigger impact with our puny lives. Even as believers, we really want what we do to count for something more. I know I feel that way. If you share that restlessness, please join me in a conversation here. You are welcome to jump in anytime. We want to explore how God can use us to reach spiritual dying people with the life-saving message of Jesus Christ. Pretty scary that God's plan is using every day, ordinary people like us. Can we delegate this to our pastor or how about Billy Graham? A Life That MattersIf you really want to engage in the conversation here, it is my sincere hope that you would be able to use the tremendous materials put together by Ron Hutchcraft and the RHM team. Ron wrote the book, A Life That Matters. We've had people tell us things like, "This is the most important book you'll ever read, next to the Bible." Sound a little over the top? How about you read it for yourself, and then you can make your own decision. If you've read the book, please weigh in. Don't take my word for it. The book, A Life That Matters, will be the reference point for just about everything we discuss here. There's also the DVD curriculum, including two DVDs and a Guidebook, which is ideal for small groups, or for individual or family study. There's a good chance you're reading this now because you've been going through the DVD Curriculum. Super! If you came at this through another portal, you're still invited. Just be clear that the purpose of the blog here is not to present or teach all the material found in the curriculum. This is really intended to be the conversation for those who are significantly wrestling through this material. We will interact together on what's working, what the "ah ha" moments are, what's not working, what we could do better, and how we can support each other. You'll also find on the website here, a lot of other great content to explore. Some of you will really want to go deep. Thoughts? Insights? Next time, I would like to talk about Facebook, and how the principles found in A Life That Matters can directly apply to this amazing social networking site. |
