No Such Thing As Absolute Truth?I'll never forget one of the professors I had while attending college during my undergrad studies. On the first day of class, he made it very clear that he was opposed to Christianity, made fun of people who read the Bible, and proceeded to explain that there was no way to prove that something was one hundred percent truth - no absolute truth. Now that's a great way to start off a college class. I was a Christian, more zealous than knowledgeable. I'll admit I didn't know how to respond.

In the days and months that followed, I did my best to attend his class with an open mind and tried to avoid having a judgmental spirit toward this lost professor and his faulty belief system, and it taught me something. In fact, it taught me many things. First, this experience motivated me to dig deep and find out what I really believed about God, the Bible and my own personal faith journey. I needed this. There comes a time in the life of every young man or young woman when their faith must become truly theirs and not just their parent's if they grew up in a Christian household. This was the time for me.

What it ultimately came down to without going into all the details, was whether I was going to believe what the Bible says. I know what you are thinking. I realize that "believing what the Bible says" doesn't cut it with people who have intellectual roadblocks to following Christ. But for me, this was what I needed and I made the right choice to believe the Bible. My life has never been the same. Specifically, God used Romans 8:1 to set my own life free from the guilt of my past and give me knew life, which I was desperate for even though I had been a Christ-follower for many years.

Second, it gave me a much better understanding of how lost people think toward the Gospel. Two things were clear to me from that point going forward. Lost people had to be able to see the Jesus-difference in me, and I was going to need to be able to share the Gospel in a clear and compelling way. Because of where I lived (smack in the middle of the Bible belt), it meant that when I talked to others about faith related stuff, I would have to draw a thick line between what it meant to have religion and what it meant to have a relationship with God. This proved to be the difference in many lives coming to know Jesus for the first time.

Third, this experience helped me understand that I didn't have to live with the pressure of having all the answers to people's faith roadblocks. It set me free to love people as they were, while sharing the truth of the Gospel with them in simple ways and allowing God's Spirit to do the convincing.

Fourth, it led me to get my hands on some tools to help me deal with people like my professor with intellectual honesty. If you are burdened for reaching someone with intellectual roadblocks to faith, here are a few books I would recommend that you buy for them and ask them to read that may help answer their tough questions, if you are unable to do so with confidence. "Evidence That Demands a Verdict," by Josh McDowell, "More Than a Carpenter," by Josh McDowell (a short, easy read paperback by Josh that I used most often), "The Case for Christ," by Lee Strobel, and "The Case for Faith," by Lee Strobel. There are certainly more resources out there, but these will help get you started in the right direction so that you can "Give an answer for the hope that you have." (1 Peter 3:15 )
