The Conversation
I just had a conversation with a friend that became life-changing when he made this statement: "Every gift from God is a risk to Him losing our hearts." And in the context of our conversation, it became so clear how easy it is to seek God for His blessing, favor, and provision. And when we receive it, to forget Him.
When we quote Psalm 37:4 , "Delight yourself in the Lord and He will give you the desires of your heart," all too often we want our desires fulfilled and miss the part about delighting in God. Some of you reading this blog are like me - you are desperate to see God's hand move in some way. But no matter what your need is, the question still remains: even if God comes through for you today, would you forget about Him tomorrow?
I am embarrassed at the shallowness of my love for God Himself after the conversation with my friend. Wherever you are today in your spiritual journey, I challenge you to consider these questions I face: If God stepped in and met your greatest need today, would you forget about Him tomorrow? What if He chooses not to meet your need on your timetable, or in the way that you think is best? What if He chooses to remain silent? Will you love Him anyway?
Perhaps we would be wise to heed the same warning God gave the Israelites in Deuteronomy 8:10 . "When you have eaten and are satisfied, praise the LORD your God for the good land he has given you. Be careful that you do not forget the LORD your God." |
