The human stomach wasn't designed to swallow an entire lake. I learned that the hard way one summer when I learned how to water ski. A few wise words from an expert water skier and I finally got my act together. My lungs are still saying "thank you." If you're going to do something right, learn from an expert. If you want to know how to expertly rescue the spiritually dying, watch the Master Himself: Jesus. As RHM's heart breaks for a lost generation of young people, we're doing what Jesus did: Go to where the "lost" are. Love them. Speak spiritual truth in their language. That's why we're launching "The Doug and Jon Show." After over a year of development, we believe God has blessed us with a blueprint that can be a lifeline for a generation that's convinced that religion is the last thing they need. If you know much about this "millennial" generation, you know they think they know all they need to about Christianity. They see Christians as judgmental, out-of-touch political conservatives that care only about converting them. They may have met lots of Christians and tasted lots of religion ... but they've never really met Jesus. Young people today feel a great sense of abandonment, because their parents have let them down. Adding to that sense of isolation is great technological developments and changes in communication. The play date has become the email. The face-to-face conversation has become the text message. The "hangout" has become the internet. Because this is where their "tribes" hang out, more and more millennials look for life answers on the internet. In fact, in the last few years the internet has become, far and away, the #1 source of information for these "digital natives." That's why we must meet them there. Churches are good. Christian concerts and events are fine. But the reality is, if you can figure out how to locate and communicate authentically with a young person on the internet, you have a potential "lost" audience in the hundreds of millions, hungry to hear the hope of Jesus. Because Jesus knew exactly where lost people were and went to them, I believe He'd be on the internet a lot today. That's why we're there through "The Doug and Jon Show," to build a bridge from the youth culture to the cross. The irresistible hope of Jesus, communicated in an authentic, culturally aware and relevant way is an explosive, life-changing combination. That's why RHM has undertaken a massive youth media strategy to bring Jesus to the 21st Century young person. It is our prayer that this initiative will be nothing less than an historic rescue breakthrough for this generation of young people. RHM's primary youth media outreach weapons fall under one brand that encompasses the entire initiative: "The Doug and Jon Show." Through TheDougandJonShow.com we are committed to offering the lost young person on this planet a cutting-edge, highly entertaining, interactive, and spiritually impacting website. The primary goal of this website is to offer spiritual rescue through a relationship with Jesus Christ to high school age students. We'll accomplish this by doing what young people are already doing all the time: building relationships on the internet. Like Jesus, we find them in their community: MySpace, Facebook, iTunes, text messaging. As we find them, we make sure they want to then find us. We accomplish this by seeding the internet with podcasts, cartoons, videos, etc. on the sites where students hang out the most, using their cultural language. All of these "attention getters" link to the website. Once on the website, the student has the opportunity to easily navigate their way to help for areas they struggle in and ultimately, to the Gospel. "The Doug and Jon Show" youth rescue initiatives form a "rescue circle," a synergistic full-circle strategy. This approach not only includes web presence but also face-to-face interaction through "Doug and Jon Show" live events. The website helps build interest in the event experience, and the event experience helps build greater interest in the website. One of the youth experts we work with, the CEO of an organization that works with large ministries like Luis Palau and Youth for Christ, and helped create the Dare 2 Share and DC/LA mega-youth conferences, had this to say about the website design and internet strategy: "I am overwhelmed with excitement and hope. You have envisioned an amazing beast, unlike anything else. People of every age will eat this up - you have a truly wonderful concept here. Your approach to reaching the lost inspires me - I love it, because I know it will work with astounding results. Thanks for letting me be on this journey with you. It's a pleasure to witness and participate." As millions of young people start their new school year, our prayer is that your heart is heavy that so many of them are headed into a Christ-less eternity. That cannot stand when the vast majority of those that ever come to Christ do it before they graduate high school! Our hope is that you're on your knees daily for this generation - and that God will use "The Doug and Jon Show" to tell them how much He loves them. Would you: 1) Pray that God would give us favor with this generation of lost young people. Following His lead, |
