“Therefore, if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature: old things are passed away; behold, all things are become new.” 2 Corinthians 5:17 , King James Version

Before Christ

To “step into my world” means my sharing with you my life story and testimony of the saving power of the Lord Jesus Christ in my life. I was born in New York City, but grew up mostly in the Washington, DC area. At the age of three, I started playing the piano. When I was eight and a student at a school for the blind, I began formal lessons, having driven my family crazy for the previous five years with my noise and banging. Music had been a significant part of my home life in those formative years, as we spent so much time listening to the radio or records. At school, I was active in chorus and much later, helped found a jazz combo.

I was not athletic and despised physical education. Though people liked my music in general, I didn’t make a lot of friends easily. There were times I wanted to be alone to think, but at a residential school for the blind, privacy is a rare commodity. My time at home, however, made up for the lack of that commodity, and I spent much of it by the radio and playing my records.

We seldom attended worship, so anything I heard about the Lord was through radio programs—if I could stand the ranting and raving of their preachers—or through attendance at chapel every day at school. It was not a Christian school, but chapel was required. I also read some religious publications in Braille.

Assured of Heaven

It was while I was in the ninth grade, two years after my father’s untimely death, that I first heard about a personal relationship with Christ and that I could only be assured of heaven if I realized my sinfulness, asked Christ to forgive me of my sins and allow Him into my heart by faith. By then, I was an emotional wreck—tired of school, tired of my temper and being bullied, tired of trying to make myself better. It was in my dorm room that I knelt down and asked Jesus to be my Savior.

Jesus Has Redeemed Me

Growth was slow, and it took me many years to realize that God actually loved me unconditionally. Much time was to elapse before I could accept myself as justified in His sight. At school, I had been told how dumb, stupid, and directionless I was and that I would not amount to much, but God showed me otherwise.

After college and graduate school, I toured for two years as an accompanist for a baritone player, who was then working with a Christian mission organization. We sang at churches, schools, and prison. During that time, I married my college sweetheart whom I had met while I was a graduate student. After two years touring, I decided to tour on my own when I could and, at the same time, try to find more steady work. We moved back to Texas and settled in the Dallas area. I found whatever work I could, not an easy venture.

With my faithful guide dog Lucky, I travel anywhere I’m invited to share my testimony and to tell others of how Jesus has redeemed me. My prayer is that you, dear reader, will acknowledge your need of Him and allow Him into your heart before it’s too late. Come to Him now, while you have the opportunity.
