Our friend, Christy, said she’ll never eat at Burger King again—it has nothing to do with the food. That’s where the bombshell hit! That’s where her parents took her when she was twelve years old to tell her they were getting a divorce. Man, that is a bombshell! We felt those shockwaves in our own extended family.

I’m Ron Hutchcraft, and here’s one of the reasons why that bombshell does so much damage. God says in Malachi 2 , when people were asking why they weren’t getting their prayers answered, he said, “…because the Lord is acting as a witness between you and the wife of your youth because you’ve broken faith with her though she’s your partner—the wife of your marriage covenant. Has not the Lord made them one? In flesh and spirit they are his. And why one? Because he was seeking godly offspring” (verses 14-15).

You know, if you’re married, a life that matters requires a marriage that works. So if you’re still waiting to make a marriage decision, be very careful and very prayerful. This is for life! There’s something worse than not being married; it’s being married to the wrong person. And if you’re thinking of bailing out of your marriage, you’ll probably lose that marriage if you offer that possibility. Fight for your marriage with everything you’ve got.

God says in this passage, “I hate divorce” (Malachi 2:16 ). Not divorced people, but He says, “I hate divorce.” It does so much damage. If you’re saying, “Ron, there’s not much hope for our marriage.” Remember, Jesus did His first miracle at a wedding and He still does marriage miracles.
