You know you’ve gotta feel bad for Bruce Banner. He’s the guy in the comic books and in the new summer movie now, too, who’s got a real problem when he gets mad. He turns into this scary, green guy called the Incredible Hulk and his anger actually turns him into something pretty ugly; of course, he’s not the only one.

I’m Ron Hutchcraft, and I know that anger sure doesn’t bring out the best in me. The Bible puts it this way, “Everyone should be quick to listen, slow to speak and slow to become angry, for man’s anger does not bring about the righteous life that God desires” (James 1:19-20). Well I can say, “Amen” to that.

I mean anger really does make us ugly. Words that wound people, scars that are left that can last for years, relationships that are never the same, the people who have a little less respect for you every time you erupt—that’s stuff that makes a life that matters into a life that injures other people. I found that you gotta deal with stuff when it’s small; if you stuff it, it’s gonna grow—you let it go, you let it grow. That’s why the Bible says, “Don’t let the sun go down while you’re still angry,” And it also says we should be, “Quick to listen,” and that will help us be, “slow to anger.” We’re a lot less likely to get angry if we’ll listen a little more and understand the other person, because anger always makes you ugly.

We’ve got a lot more spiritual encouragement on a lot of real life issues at our website. I’d invite you to meet us there. It’s ALifeThatMatters.org because God put you here to live a life that matters.
