Every year about this time, some of us boys had to go out in public in our bathrobes to play shepherds in the church Christmas pageant. What I didn’t know when I was playing a shepherd was how, in some ways, I’m supposed to be like one even now. Not the wardrobe—the mission.

I’m Ron Hutchcraft, and little did those shepherds know when they camped out in that field that night that they were about to step into a life that matters. The Bible says, “they hurried off and found Mary and Joseph and the baby, who was lying in the manger. When they had seen Him, they spread the word… and all who heard it were amazed” (Luke 2:16-18 ). Here’s what’s so cool about this. God picked some of the most unlikely, apparently least qualified, totally ordinary guys around to be the first ones to tell the world about His Son. He’s still doing that. He’s counting on ordinary folks to tell their personal world about the Jesus they’ve experienced. Most folks are ordinary, right? So they feel safe around ordinary people like you and me.

These days, most lost people may never come to one of our meetings. They may never listen to someone that they think is a professional God-salesman. They’ll listen to someone like them; the “shepherd” who’s seen Jesus. God says, “We are Christ’s ambassadors” (2 Corinthians 5:20 ). You are where you are to help the people there be in heaven with you, and there’s no better time of the year to tell them about your Jesus. It’s the one time of the year He pops up all over the place…TV specials, music at the mall. This Christmas season give them the gift you’ve kept in the closet too long. Give them Jesus!
