If you live in America the chances are you either are or know someone who’s diabetic. I know I do. Twenty-four million diabetics in this country—people whose life may depend on limiting the sugar they take in, which is something all of us in this sweet-tooth culture need to be careful about.

I’m Ron Hutchcraft and the sugar addiction actually goes farther than an appetite for sweet foods. It actually infects the spiritual lives of a lot of us because well, we’re addicted to spiritual sugar. Too many of us are event Christians; we depend on the next spiritual event to keep us going. We live from high to high—the next retreat, the concert, conference, Bible study, service and in between are these long stretches of spiritual mediocrity and boredom. Then some believers are institutional Christians. See, it’s a lot more about my church then my Jesus. We love our spiritual candy bars—sugar that gets you going, but can’t keep you going. Isn’t it time we move from a Jesus high to a Jesus life?

The New Living Bible says, “Let the message of Christ in all its fullness fill your lives” (Colossians 3:16 ). See, the Word of God is the protein that keeps you going—just like a toddler. One of the great signs of your spiritual maturity is whether or not you can feed yourself or whether you always need someone else to do it. If you don’t anchor your relationship to the rock of God’s Word each day, you are going down when the pressure hits; you’re building your house on sand or sugar. You make your time in God’s Word the highest priority of your personal schedule.
