I just love this time of year to drive through towns and see Christmas lights. We were on a very long drive on an Indian reservation that we visit each year where Christ has been rejected for centuries. You can drive for miles at Christmastime and you see no Christmas lights. So at Christmas, you drive through just like long stretches of darkness until you get to this one village. Suddenly you see this one spot in the darkness that’s a blaze of Christmas lights! The missionary wife who serves in that village is like psycho Christmas. On November 1, she starts outlining their house, their church and the cross on top with Christmas lights. You can’t miss it.

I’m Ron Hutchcraft, and when I see that island of light in a sea of night, I realize the darker the darkness is, the more the light shows up. That’s a good reminder of maybe why you are where you are: the place where you work, your school, your social group, or where you recreate, maybe even your family. It could be that Jesus has asked you to represent Him in a place that’s really dark–except for you. Here’s who God says you are: “Children of God without fault in a crooked and depraved generation, in which you shine like stars in the universe, as you hold out the word of life” (Philippians 2:15-16 ).

I know you must feel alone sometimes, you get discouraged; maybe sometimes you’re tempted just to fit in. But in a room where there’s one candle burning, if that candle goes out, it is totally dark. You are a life that matters; you are the voice, the hands, the face of Jesus among those people. Remember, the darker it is, the more the light matters!
