Well, we just happened to be in the path of Hurricane Ike’s aftermath, and maybe you were too; a lot of people were. I tell you what, he had our attention. Actually, he didn’t end up effecting us as much as we thought, but what hit Galveston launched what they called the largest search and rescue effort in Texas history. They rescued hundreds of people. Now it struck me how often after a disaster you hear those two words together: search and rescue. See, you can’t rescue if you don’t go looking for the people whose lives depend on that rescue. They’re not going to come to you.

I’m Ron Hutchcraft, and I was thinking about the largest search and rescue effort launched in the history of the planet. It was on a Roman cross on a garbage dump outside of Jerusalem. It’s where Jesus came to rescue us from an awful eternity. If you belong to Him today, it’s because He came looking for you. If any of the spiritually dying people around us are ever going to be rescued, it’s going to be because we go looking for them, not by waiting for them to come to one of our rescue stations.

That’s why you’re so important because you work or live or go to school right where some of those lost people are, and Jesus is calling you to join Him in doing whatever it takes to rescue them like He did. That’s what living a life that matters forever means. The Bible says, “Snatch others from the fire and save them” (Jude 1:23 ). So listen to their story and then tell them your hope story, and then tell them His story about a love big enough to die for them.
